Dementia Action Week: Raising Awareness and Supporting Families at Home

dementia care week

Dementia Action Week is an important national campaign led by Alzheimer’s Society, aiming to raise awareness, encourage understanding, and support those affected by dementia. It’s a time for individuals, families, and communities to come together, learn more about the condition, and take positive steps towards better support.

At A1 Home Care Ltd, this is something we see every day. Dementia affects not only the individual but also their loved ones, and having the right support in place can make a real difference to quality of life.

Understanding Dementia

Dementia is not a single condition, but a term used to describe a range of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, behaviour, and communication. It can progress over time, making everyday tasks more challenging and often causing confusion or frustration.

While a diagnosis can feel overwhelming, many people continue to live well with dementia for years, especially with the right care, routine, and support around them.

Why Awareness Matters

Dementia Action Week helps to break down stigma and encourages open conversations. Greater awareness means people are more likely to recognise early signs, seek advice, and understand how to support someone living with the condition.

For families, it can also be reassuring to know they are not alone and that help is available when they need it.

Supporting Someone Living with Dementia

Caring for a loved one with dementia can be rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. Small changes in behaviour, memory loss, or confusion can gradually increase the level of support needed.

Some simple ways to support someone at home include:

  • Keeping routines consistent to reduce anxiety
  • Using clear, calm communication
  • Encouraging familiar activities and hobbies
  • Creating a safe and comfortable home environment
  • Offering reassurance and patience

These small steps can make daily life feel more manageable and help maintain a sense of independence.
